Auto Accident: What do I do when an insurance company calls?
Car accidents happen far too often. It is not a matter of if, but when it will happen to you. Or, maybe it already has happened. Now you are wondering what to do. What do I say to my insurance when they call? What do I say when the driver involved insurance calls me? Insurance companies require their insureds to report any accidents and to cooperate with them in their investigation. However, you are not required to cooperate with the other driver’s insurance company.
Both insurance companies are going to contact all parties involved, and any witnesses if needed to. This is so that the insurance companies can do a thorough investigation to determine who is at fault, if not already made clear. At this point it is a he said/she said unless there is proof such as an onboard vehicle camera or witnesses to the accident. Or if one of the drivers has admitted to being at fault.
You are required to cooperate with your insurance company. However, you are not required to speak to the other insurance company. In most cases, it is in your best interest not to speak with them. Since the insurance companies are trying to determine who is at fault they may try and get you to state something in their favor to make you settle regardless of who’s at fault.
Usually, they will offer some kind of deal that is worth less than what should be offered. The other insurance company will contact you as soon as possible in an attempt to get you to settle without knowing the extent of damages or of your injuries.
The optimum choice is to hire a well versed personal injury claims Attorney. Politely decline the other insurance companies’ request for a statement or settlement. Consult with your attorney and let them do the hard work and talking for you. This will give you an advantageous strategy to receive the best outcome of the case and redeem what is owed to you rightfully.
