Buses are used to transport large groups of people. They are convenient, cost-efficient and when you step onto one you feel safe. You feel the driver has had extensive training on driving such a huge vessel and are confident in putting your life in the driver’s hands. Yet, what happens if you are in fact involved in a bus accident?

Bus accidents may be lower on the scale compared to other auto accidents. They do not happen frequently but they do happen. Most buses can carry forty to eighty people, meaning more victims involved, and some do not have safety equipment such as seat restraints and airbag systems. Thus giving them the potential to cause more harm and injury than other auto accidents.

When involved in a bus accident, first and foremost make sure you seek medical help. The driver and/or staff of the bus are supposed to be responsible for contacting medical assistance. If this is not a possibility make sure you contact 911 and report the accident. This not only ensures for medical treatment but it also ensures the accident will be reported to local law enforcement.

Waiting to see a doctor for injuries could force you to lose your claim. Most states require victims involved in bus accidents to have been seen by a medical professional within a limited period of time or the claim could be barred. In most cases the bus company will absorb the expense of your medical visit and /or medical expenses. Make sure to get tested for the back, spine, and head.

Second, and only if you are able to, take notes on everything you remember about the accident. Also, take down names and numbers of whoever was involved in the accident. Such as the driver of the bus, any other passengers or other drivers and passengers of other vehicles involved, and the officer at the scene.

Third, a picture is worth a thousand words. Take pictures of the scene from different angles, the more the better.  Most of the documentation will be taken by law enforcement once they have arrived, however, it would be in your best interest to have your own documentation so you do not have to rely on anyone else.

These steps can help insure you are compensated accordingly for any harm that occurred due to a bus accident. Still, bus accident claims are extremely complex and you will need the help of an attorney to assist you through the process. Trying to go up against a bus company and their legal team may result in injustice. Do not take a risk, and give yourself the best chance at emerging victorious.
