Steps to Follow After a Vehicle Accident | Sodhi Law Group of Modesto
After being involved in a vehicle accident first and foremost you must stop your vehicle. Second, if it is safe and necessary to do so, pull over. Even if you feel no damage has been done to the vehicles. Of course, you should always make sure everyone is alright and no one has been hurt or needs medical attention. Lastly, do not take responsibility for the accident.
Once you have made sure everyone is ok, or have called emergency services for someone who needs medical attention, the next step is to contact the police and make a report of the accident. Ask the other party involved for their vehicle insurance policy information, including the policy number and company name. Also, collect their driver’s license information and contact information. Then you must call your vehicle insurance company and start a claim.
Other important information to collect is the year, make and model of the other vehicle involved. Date and time of the accident, and if possible an address or location of where the accident took place. Pictures are always helpful and with the convenience of cell phones these days, are easy to take. Taking multiple photos from various angles helps ensure that your insurance company can get a clear view of what happened.
Once again never admit fault. Your insurance company is there to speak for you. You are obligated to cooperate with your own insurance company, however, you do not have to speak with the other parties insurance company. Insurance companies can hire heavy hitters for Lawyers. Lawyers that know the laws inside and out and that can intimidate to get what they want. For that reason, it is always in your best interest to contact a lawyer and have a heavy hitter on your side
